The Employees' Provident Fund is the backbone of retirement saving for India's salaried workforce: 12% of your basic + DA goes in from your salary, your employer adds another 12% (part of which flows to EPS pension), and the whole balance earns a government-declared interest rate (8.25% for 2024-25) that is tax-free under conditions. Because contributions rise with every salary hike and the balance compounds for 30–35 years, the final corpus surprises most people — usually pleasantly. This EPF calculator projects your PF balance at retirement from your current basic salary, age, expected annual hikes and the EPF interest rate, showing employee vs employer contributions vs interest so you can see which engine did the most work.

How EPF grows

Monthly contributions (employee 12% + employer 3.67% to EPF after the 8.33% EPS diversion, on basic + DA up to the ₹15,000 wage ceiling unless the employer contributes on full salary) compound monthly at the declared annual rate.

Example

Age 25, basic ₹40,000, 8% annual hike, 8.25% EPF rate, retire at 60. Projected EPF corpus ≈ ₹2.9 crore — of which interest alone is roughly ₹1.9 crore. Starting 5 years later cuts it to ~₹1.9 crore.

Key rules

Withdrawals before 5 years of continuous service are taxable; after 5 years the maturity is tax-free. Interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh/year is taxable. You can check the live balance on the EPFO member portal; this calculator is for projection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current EPF interest rate?

8.25% for FY 2024-25, declared yearly by EPFO. Enter the latest rate above if it changes.

How much of my salary goes to EPF?

12% of basic + DA from you; your employer adds 12%, of which 8.33% (up to ₹1,250/month) goes to EPS pension and 3.67% to your EPF.

Is EPF tax-free?

Yes, if you complete 5 continuous years of service (EEE). Withdrawals before that are taxable, and interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh/year is taxable.

Should I withdraw PF when changing jobs?

Transfer it instead via Form 13 / the UAN portal. Withdrawing resets the 5-year clock and forfeits compounding.
